In a spreadsheet, you have to “tell” Excel which cells you want to add up. So for the English column, the 95 is in cell B2, the 96 is in cell B3, the 97 is in cell B4, the 92 is in cell B5 and another 98 in cell B6. So we want the answer to B2 + B3 + B4 + B5 + B6.
To let Excel know that is the sum we want working out, do this:
- Click in the cell where you want the total to appear (This is cell B8 for us)
- Now type formula inside the formula bar
- Type in this: =SUM(B2:B6) – It means B2 + B3 + B4 + B5 + B6
- Your spreadsheet should look like the screenshot below
Notice that the Name box top left says B8. This is the cell where we want the answer to appear.
When you have entered the formula in the formula bar, press the return key on your keyboard.
